How to SUPERCHARGE your Resume - by DCSI International Executive Recruiting
March 07, 2009
I get asked a ton of questions and the most popular question is: “How does my resume look & how do I make it look better?” Most resumes we see are ok, a few are excellent, but most are poor & lack panache. This is my professional advice for anyone looking to Supercharge their resume.
1. Have “Skills & Experience Summary” at the top of your resume.
- Details are important & your resume needs to STAND OUT.
- Include buzz words & acronyms & a quick summation of your relevant experience such as: Experience includes P&L; International (list countries); Strong Leadership; Motivated & Passionate; Vertical Product Market Expertise (list markets Medical, Consumer, Greentech, Telecom, etc…); Fluency in foreign Languages; Will Relo; & Certifications.
2. List your Education - degree earned, or Incomplete.
3. List your current and past employment with start and end dates. Be sure to add one sentence that briefly outlines what each company does, size $, & their website. Don’t assume everyone who see’s the names of the companies you’ve worked at knows who they are & what they do.
4. Under each job, add concise bullet points that describe A. What you did, B. How you did it. Potential hiring authorities don’t want to know that you were/are great, they want to know how you became great – so tell them & be brief.
5. BE HONEST. The odds are stacked against you before you start, don’t give someone an easy reason to drop you as a candidate. Don’t lie by way of omission – if you had a brief stint of employment, list it. If you feel so inclined you can write a sentence explaining why you were there for a short term, but don’t add anything derogatory or say bad things about anyone or any past/present employer. It’s important to be positive.
