Critical Issues Facing EMS Providers

Executives should stay focused on their core business objectives and should know when to outsource critical core staffing and re-organizational issues to qualified & industry specific search firms.

Most signs in the economy, and amidst the CEM industry in general, support what we're seeing, a recovery that is starting to increase in velocity. Within this recovery we're seeing a growing trend to narrow down overly broad lists of services and vertical markets served, and a push to focus on true core competencies. What is driving this type of change and thought? Perhaps it stems from too many big players trying to compete for too much of the same electronics manufacturing pie. Maybe it's because of the severe downturn we've experienced over the past 36 months. Whatever the forces are driving this trend, it is clear that the focus is moving and the future looks more exciting than ever.

What appears to be emerging is a much more industry specific focus, executive level involvement and hands on approach. This first entails identifying what your core competency is, then increasing the energy and support toward that core business. The next focus is to simultaneously begin eliminating the things that are not advancing your company towards this core focus. This process then enables companies to provide a higher level of service and concentration toward both new business as well as existing business and relationships. Those who adapt quickly and efficiently by reducing outside distractions can strengthen their immediate position in the marketplace and will also be in a better position to retain existing business for longer periods of time.

Making aggressive organizational changes causes resistance from long term tenured employees that in many cases cannot adapt or don't end up fitting into the new business model. As a direct result, reorganizing and replacing key executives have again taken center stage. The growing problem we see is that many electronics manufactures are becoming bogged down and in some instances, overwhelmed with trying to juggle both a corporate re-structuring while simultaneously trying to locate and attract additional team members. As the rules of engagement change within the CEM industry, they've changed as much within the executive search industry as well. We've watched as some companies have expended months and months of time and countless man-power hours trying to either find key level executives through internal efforts, or that have selected unqualified search firms for these searches. In many instances both methods have failed and worse, have diverted time and energy away from these companies core business.

Knowing when to outsource and who to outsource your core staffing needs to is paramount to achieving efficient results and promoting an attractive corporate image. Hourly paid employees and individual contributor/non-management positions can typically be sourced through your own internal recruiting processes and sometimes through internet and job board advertisements. Unnecessarily advertising higher level management or executive level vacancies or replacements not only exposes your confidential corporate play book, but also presents a poor image to the available talent base evaluating a potential career within your company. The electronics manufacturing industry is more competitive than ever and the need to keep your company's agenda and focus confidential is also more important than ever. Whether you decided to head up an initial search through your internal efforts, or to outsource them to an appropriate search firm, we recommend keeping your most critical core staffing needs confidential.

However large or small your company is, keeping your core business objectives in focus and confidential will better enable you to remain competitive in today's market. Potential candidates and your competition are evaluating your moves more closely than ever and are extremely perceptive and influenced by the way you represent your business and plans. We suggest reviewing how your business has advertised career openings and recruited talent in the past and evaluating how you've represented yourself to your target audience. Last we recommend choosing an industry specific, qualified executive search firm to partner with and develop a confidential strategy to target, attract and retain the best executives within the industry. Knowing when to outsource your staffing needs will save time, money and maintain your executive's team focus on your core competency.
